When I stopped by the local coffee shop, there was a bevy of older men smoking cigars and sipping their morning brew. I asked if they’re regulars and one responded: “We come here every day and talk about things that happened 50 years ago.”

7 Things To Do in Pittsburgh in July 2026

Sensitive bellies don’t have to miss out on this sweet summer treat! I sampled a selection of vegan flavors from local shops to bring you my picks for the creamiest plant-based scoops Pittsburgh has to offer.

This Butler Street shop serves ice cream from Penn State’s famous on-campus creamery, made through their Department of Food and Science. So it makes sense that they’ve totally mastered vegan ice cream, too. They use a blend of milks — like coconut, oat, and almond — and the texture is superior to all other vegan ice creams I've tried! Plus, the flavors are always standouts. My go-to is the pistachio, but I’ve also devoured blueberry lavender, dulce de leche, strawberry PopTarts, blueberry pancake, and Oreo peanut butter fudge.

Leona’s is already super friendly to customers with dietary restrictions — all of their dairy ice cream is lactose free, making it easier to digest. But did you know that they have delicious non-dairy ice cream too? I tried the coffee flavor made with coconut milk for an afternoon pick-me-up. It was so smooth and the perfect amount of sweet. Stop by the Garfield shop for a scoop or one of their famous ice cream sandwiches. (I’m eyeing up the black sesame ice cream on salted tahini chocolate chunk cookies.)

Imagine my surprise when I walked into Posman Books to find an ice cream stand with some of the most interesting flavors like coconut caramel chip, coconut pandan, grasshopper (mint) made with cashew milk, and chocolate chunk. I tried the coconut mango sticky rice and it had delightful little surprises of mochi swirled throughout! It’s the perfect treat to enjoy while window shopping in the Strip.

Bruster’s has chains all across the country, but it started in Bridgewater in Beaver County. I’ve sampled flavors at a few locations, but somehow the oatmilk-based scoops from their truck are always better — with unique flavors like black raspberry chocolate chip, cold brew, peanut butter Oreo, and raspberry truffle. You can find me going back for seconds at 

This family-run shop is known for small-batch scoops and ice cream sandwiches made with Better Maid donuts — and they always have a couple of really tasty vegan gelato flavors, like peanut butter and chocolate coconut. They’re made with almond milk, which I was skeptical of at first — sometimes the texture isn’t quite right — but I was pleased to be proven wrong! The peanut butter was shockingly creamy, and I’d stand in the long line to get a cone again and again.

No matter what corner of Pittsburgh you’re in, there’s likely a Millie’s chain nearby, serving seasonal flavors in their signature homemade waffle cone. You can grab a scoop of vegan flavors like mango, mint chip, and brownie batter from a scoop shop — or find them in the freezer aisle at some Giant Eagle locations. Tip: Are you a snowbird? They now have 

You can find this Ohio-based ice cream in grocery stores or stop by their scoop shops in Bakery Square and SouthSide Works. Try Jeni’s vegan flavors like cold brew with coconut cream, banana cream pudding, caramel pecan sticky buns, and lemon bar. I went for the Texas sheet cake, a super rich and decadent flavor made for chocolate fiends like me! Tip: this is a great spot for a late-night treat. They don’t close until 12 a.m.!

It’s freezing outside — snowy, slushy, and even a little icy — and it made us wonder: 

How often does the city deal with winter weather like this?

And when has it been bad enough to break records or shut down the city?

Here are a few of Pittsburgh’s worst snowstorms and cold snaps, plus a look at how we started measuring inclement weather in the first place.

Our city was at the forefront of what eventually became the National Weather Service.

In 1870, Congress ordered the first official meteorological observations, starting with military stations assigned to the U.S. Army Signal Office, or Signal Corps. Pittsburgh was part of this network. That November, a city worker recorded our first temperature reading by 

leaning out of a 5th Avenue window in Downtown

Modern weather stations followed in the 1930s at our airports and elsewhere. Today, our main NWS station is in Coraopolis near 

January is by far the coldest month in Pittsburgh, when the average high is 39°F and the average low is 23°F. (Scroll down for the coldest temperature ever recorded here!) It usually rains or snows (or both) 

But there have been lots of heavy snowfalls and frigid cold spells all throughout the winter months ⬇️

Right after Thanksgiving in 1950, Southwestern PA got more than 27 inches of snow. The “Great Appalachian Storm” was 

, the average temp that season hovered just below 21°F. January was especially brutal, with an average of 11°F. We even had 

The “Storm of the Century” dropped 23.6 inches of snow on March 13, 1993. That’s 

! Major highways shut down, flights were canceled or delayed, and in typical Pittsburgh fashion, the city still held its annual St. Patrick’s Day parade; 117 marching bands and groups braved the storm and swept through Downtown.

Pittsburgh’s coldest recorded temperature of -22°F happened 

. The high that day only got up to -3°F. It was a part of a blistering stretch when then-Gov. Bob Casey declared a state of emergency and the rivers fully froze. Temperatures stayed below zero for 

A snowstorm dropped 21.9 inches on a Friday in February 2010, and school was cancelled 

 for then-Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, who’d traveled to Seven Springs to celebrate his 30th birthday and was not around to help the city in crisis.

In early January 2014, the city recorded temps as low as -9°F. Meteorologists told everyone to stay indoors to avoid near-instantaneous frostbite, so of course videos were all over social media of folks throwing pans of water in the air to watch them freeze. Then-newly elected Mayor Bill Peduto
