Learn Pittsburgh’s Black History

Dig into the archives of Pittsburgh photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris with the Carnegie Museum of Art; learn more about the African diaspora and the fight for civil rights in Pittsburgh at the Heinz History Center’s “From Slavery to Freedom” exhibit; or discover the story of the legendary playwright at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center and the renovated house and cultural hub on Bedford Avenue in the Hill District.

  • 📌 Want to see places that aren’t here anymore? Find historical landmarks in the Science Center’s Railroad and Miniature Village, like the home of famous suffragist Daisy Lampkin and the Pittsburgh Courier Building.

Have A Yinzer Mardi Gras

For dinner, grab some gumbo from Cafe on the Corner in Marshall Shadeland, and for dessert, get the quintessential Pittsburgh paczki — a Polish pastry filled with cream, custard, or jelly. Here’s some places to find them. And if you want to go out and celebrate, Allegheny Elks Lodge in East Allegheny always has a fun party.

Love Yourself & Your Neighbors

Treat yourself or your loved one with a trip to a local market, like the Pgh Flea Valentine’s Pop-Up at Trace Brewing on February 4; a hands-on activity like the Brooms, Flowers & Beer workshop at Brew Gentleman on February 25; or get flowers and a fancy meal to-go from Farmer’s Daughters and brothmonger.
