Your Daily Guide

Happy Tuesday, yinzers! Halloween is quickly approaching, and we want to see your super-niche Pittsburgh costumes from years past or hear what you’re planning for this year. Some of my favorite Pittsburgh costumes I’ve ever seen are Shenderovitch, Shenderovitch & Fish Men, the Sinkhole Bus, and the absolutely incredibly executed Butthole Window.

Email us a photo of your ultra-Pittsburgh costume or send us the great idea you haven’t pulled off yet for a chance to be featured in the newsletter or pod!

Today's Must-Know

New Stars Hit Smallman

Who needs Hollywood? This week, crews are installing 10 new markers for this year’s Pittsburgh Walk of Fame class outside The Terminal in the Strip District. [WTAE]

  • The 2026 class includes a wide array of famous Pittsburghers: Myron Cope, Martha Graham, Charles “Teenie” Harris, Franco Harris, H.J. Heinz, Shirley Jones, Mario Lemieux, Henry Mancini, Jimmy Stewart, and George Westinghouse.
  • New inductees get their stars at a free, public ceremony next Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 10:30 a.m. Mario Lemieux is scheduled to be there in person. [Pittsburgh Walk of Fame]
  • Now in its second year, Walk of Fame nominees have to have a real connection to southwestern Pennsylvania — whether they were born here, grew up here, or did some of their most important work here. The public submits names, a regional committee (including the City Cast Pittsburgh team!) reviews, and the Walk of Fame board makes the final picks. The first class included Roberto Clemente, Fred Rogers, Rachel Carson, and more. [City Cast Pittsburgh]

Pittsburgh Opera presents Verdi’s Rigoletto.

Medieval court jester Rigoletto must save his daughter from the clutches of his employer, the lecherous, womanizing Duke.

Will Rigoletto have the last laugh, or will he be the punchline?

What Else Pittsburgh's Talking About

Allegheny County Confirms First Measles Case

An unvaccinated minor tested positive for the disease, the county health department announced late Monday. While there were no school exposures, anyone who visited the Target at the Pine Creek Shopping Center between 3:45 and 5:45 p.m. on Oct. 1 may have been exposed to the virus. Unvaccinated shoppers should contact their healthcare providers for next steps. [Allegheny County]

Untangling a Housing Mess

Allegheny County is creating a new task force to look at the challenges facing residents of affordable housing units. One issue: identifying who is supposed to deal with maintenance and safety problems at privately-owned properties, where concerns can go unaddressed because no single entity claims responsibility. Why is Shapiro Talking Like This?

If you think Gov. Josh Shapiro’s cadence of speech sounds familiar, you’re not the only one. The governor currently vying for reelection has received comments (and criticism) about sounding more and more like former President Barack Obama. The comparisons haven’t hurt him in the polls, but will the Obama-like speeches drum up support or appear inauthentic? [🔒 The Atlantic]

Duo is Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot

Just in time for World Taco Day, the Pittsburgh-based language learning app is teaming up with Taco Bell for a limited-edition Duo Habanero sauce. In addition to shaming you for not practicing your Spanish, the owl wants to set your mouth on fire, too! The sauce packets feature taco-themed phrases in nine languages. [🔒 Business Times]

🌟 Congratulations to Noah J., Cassandra L., Gloria G., Cindy S., Carol G., and Mike H. for correctly guessing last week’s photo ⬇️

I love going to The Manor on Wednesdays for their all-day $8 movie tickets. It's a great way to see the newest releases on a budget and support an independent theater at the same time!
