Your Daily Guide

We’ve made it to the end of the week, Pittsburgh! Did you know that former Steelers coach Mike Tomlin spent the last 12 years creating a Minecraft City? It’s almost like he didn’t have a football team to coach or anything!

In today’s members-only podcast segment, we talk about the possibly controversial building Tomlin included in his virtual city and debate whether or not coaches with losing seasons should be allowed to have a hobby.

What Else Pittsburgh's Talking About

Duquesne Light Workers Go on Strike

Nearly 1,000 union members walked off the job on Thursday morning, after contract negotiations with the utility fell apart. The union is calling for higher staffing levels and better, safer working conditions. [TribLive]

  • What does this mean for customers? Duquesne Light says it's “maintaining normal operations” during the strike. The company has brought in non-union workers, including from outside Pennsylvania, to help cover operations. [WPXI]

Casa San José Gets a Bigger Home

More room means more ways to serve Pittsburgh’s growing Latino community. The nonprofit is moving into a new three-story building in Beechview that includes classrooms, doctor and dental exam rooms, and private therapy spaces. It sits near other community hubs, like the Pittsburgh Hispanic Development Corp. and Las Palmas grocery store. A ribbon cutting and grand opening are planned for Oct. 15. [WESA]

Robot Dogs at PIT

The airport has some new four-legged employees … sort of. Pittsburgh-based Skild AI is testing four robot dogs to report spills and overflowing trash cans, plus monitor air quality. The six-month pilot could eventually lead them to them taking other jobs (heavy sigh) including food delivery and security. If I see one of these “dogs” at the airport, I will be running the other way. [Technical.ly Pittsburgh]

Behold, the Ultimate Penguinator

The Pens' home opener is Saturday, and PPG Paints Arena has some deeply unserious new food options including a cheesesteak cone, sloppy Joe patty melt, and the Ultimate Penguinator. This sandwich has everything: turkey, roast beef, ham, two kinds of cheese, pierogies, mozzarella sticks, waffle fries, garlic ranch, and a trip to the bathroom once you’re done eating it. Hockey is back! And so is the Pittsburgh tradition of putting random things on sandwiches. [🔒 Business Times]
