What Pittsburgh's Talking About

Property Reassessments are Coming

Allegheny County has five years to figure out how to reassess an estimated half million properties across its 130 municipalities. A judge ordered the county to appoint a “special master” to preside over the process in the next two months and begin by next May. Current property taxes are based on home values from 2012. [🔒 Post-Gazette]

  • A report last week said local officials should regularly schedule property reassessments to “depoliticize the process” and limit their potentially costly impact. The county’s Government Review Commission suggested doing so the first year in a county executive’s four-year term. [WESA]

Can Dems Flip Butler County?

Voters north of Pittsburgh are choosing between Republican Scott Timko and Democrat Brandon Dukes in today’s special election for the 12th state House District. The race is considered a bellwether for Democratic steam headed into the November midterms, when Timko and Dukes will face off for a new, full term. [TribLive / 🔒 Spotlight PA]

Penn Brewery For Sale (Again)

An attorney for the city’s oldest brewery says it's in conversation with a buyer. In March, Penn Brewery filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Owners recently asked a judge to dismiss it so sale negotiations with an unnamed buyer could move forward. The attorney says Penn Brewery hopes to keep its doors open during the possible transition, and over $1 million in debt would stay with the current owners. [TribLive]

  • Are Pittsburgh breweries OK? A bunch of local breweries have closed or announced big changes this year. We asked our resident beer buff Owen Gabbey to explain the shift in brewhouse culture. [City Cast Pittsburgh]

Pools Close Early For The Season

I guess all good things come to an end. The city closed 11 of its 17 outdoor pools as seasonal lifeguards return to school. Only Bloomfield, Highland, Jack Stack, Magee, Moore, and Ream will be open through Labor Day. [WESA]
