| What Pittsburgh's Talking About |
| DOJ Stops Seeking Patient Records | Last summer, the Trump administration demanded patient records from UPMC and 19 other hospital systems about minors receiving gender-affirming care. A judge denied the justice department’s subpoena for UPMC’s records in March, and this week the DOJ withdrew its appeal, making the ruling final. UPMC officials say they didn’t turn over requested information. [WESA] | | | PA Attorney General Sues TikTok | The state says the social media app is designed to be addictive and is harmful to children, which violates our Consumer Protection Law because it claims to be suitable for teens 13 and up. Other states have sued TikTok for similar reasons, but this is the first lawsuit since the feds forced the app to have a majority U.S.-ownership, or else lose access to American users. [Pennsylvania Capital-Star] | | Hemp’s Loophole Closing | In PA, you don’t need a medical marijuana card to buy intoxicating hemp-derived products. But starting Nov. 12, businesses selling those could face drug trafficking charges if their inventory doesn’t change. That’s because a federal amendment will narrow the definition of hemp, thus closing the loophole that allows their existence. [PGH Media Partnership] | | | Pgh’s New Rare Disease Hub | A Pittsburgh nonprofit is giving $25 million to create a rare disease therapy hub with a similar funding model to something aligned with a Pearl Jam alum (seriously). [🔒 Post-Gazette] | - Another Pittsburgh-based lab is leading disease research in space. The new Trivedi Institute at Pitt will study how the human body responds to microgravity and radiation to hopefully improve health options and outcomes on Earth. [University of Pittsburgh]
