| What Pittsburgh's Talking About |
| | Commercial Street Bridge Explosion Complete | The bridge was demolished by a controlled blast yesterday morning after a (disappointing) delay. Now work begins to clear debris and slide the new replacement span into place. A section of the Parkway East will remain closed through August 3. | - In sickness and in demolitions: One worker used the PennDot live-stream as an opportunity to propose! [WTAE]
- So, how bad is the traffic? We discuss. [City Cast Pittsburgh]
| | | Allegheny County Pension Fund Short $1.4B | A new report says the pension fund needs an additional $100 million annually for the next 20 years to fulfill its financial obligations. It suggests increasing the sales, earned income, or payroll tax — which would require state approval — or raising property taxes. County Executive Sara Innamorato recently said her 2027 budget proposal will not include a property tax increase. [WESA] | | Helltown Brewing To Close Strip District Taproom | The brewery's lease expires in August, and the building's owners want to redevelop the site into a 14-story, 64-unit condo. There is hope, though: Helltown hinted at plans to find a new home in Pittsburgh, but didn’t specify a timeline. [TribLive] | - Are Pittsburgh breweries OK? Helltown’s not the first local taproom to close. We explain what's behind the trend of shuttered watering holes and why the landscape might not be as bleak as it seems. [City Cast Pittsburgh]
| | Walk of Fame Inductees Selected | Ten more local legends will be added to the city’s Walk of Fame and honored at a ceremony in October. Penguins great (and honoree) Mario Lemieux will attend alongside representatives for the other inductees, including photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris and dancer and choreographer Martha Graham. See the full list. [Pittsburgh Walk of Fame] |

| How to Make a DIY Air Purifier |
| | The ongoing fire outbreaks in Canada have sent waves of smoke into the U.S., affecting the Pittsburgh region as recently as June 28. Wildfires aside, many of us live in areas with deteriorating air quality. The Pittsburgh-New Castle-Weirton metro area is the 14th worst area for year-round particle pollution, and Allegheny County received a C grade for ozone air pollution, according to the American Lung Association’s 2023 State of the Air report. | | It’s gotten so bad in Pittsburgh that it’s likely been affecting our brains and leading to “climate anxiety.” Also, remember those stinky, and possibly dangerous, smells around the Shell cracker in Beaver County? [🎧] | | How can you improve the air quality within your home? According to the EPA, though they cannot remove all pollutants, air filters and air purifiers can be an effective way to provide ventilation and sanitize your air at home. They can be pricey, so if buying one isn’t an option right now, or if you’re the DIY type, here’s how you can make an air purifier at home: | | What You’ll Need: | - A fan that has a flat front or back. Box fans are your best bet.
- A HEPA filter. 20x20x1 will fit most fans. You can purchase these online or at your local store. Look for one with a MERV rating of 10-12, or the highest rating you can find. Avoid the blue or green nylon string filters.
- Packing tape.
| Step 1: Assembly. | Fix the air filter behind the fan. Use your tape to attach the filter to each side of your fan. | | Step 2: Test It Out. | Is air going through the fan? If not, it’s probably a taping issue. Make sure the tape is fully sealed to the frame of the fan to ensure air is not going around. | | Step 3: Enjoy. | 👀 Are you more of a visual learner? Check out this video from The New York Times. | | 🎧 Or if you’re an auditory learner, City Cast Pittsburgh’s got the DIY guide for you. | |
