Your Daily Guide

Happy Tuesday Pittsburgh! City Cast’s Laura Tsutsui reporting for newsletter duty 🫡 You’ll be seeing my name in your inbox over the next couple months, so I figured it’s time for a proper introduction.

You may recognize me from past newsletters here, but around town I’ve also been a climbing gym manager, bureaucrat, and producer on WESA’s “The Confluence” (RIP). I’m excited to spend more time exploring the Steel City with you all!

What Pittsburgh's Talking About

Walmart Eyes Former Bloomfield Rite Aid

The giant retailer wants to turn the space into a delivery hub, stocked with commonly-ordered products like paper towels. It wouldn't be open to the public; instead, delivery drivers would use the hub to fulfill same-day orders. Pittsburgh zoning officials are considering the request. [WESA]

  • We're one step closer to getting the first Wegmans in our region. Construction on the Cranberry store is set to start in the next few weeks. [City Cast Pittsburgh / 🔒 Business Times]

Pittsburgh Enacts Pool Chaperone Policy

Starting this week, kids 14 and under will need to be accompanied by an adult over 21 to enter public pools during weekends and evening hours. The “Family Swim” policy was last invoked in 2019, and makes its return as spaces like Market Square and Kennywood are also implementing chaperone requirements. [WESA / City Cast Pittsburgh]

Audio Captures CMU President’s Argument for Repainting Fence

Last July, Carnegie Mellon University painted over a student-made “No rapists on campus” message prior to President Donald Trump’s visit for an energy summit. A newly-released audio recording captures the university president's thinking at the time. Farnam Jahanian described the students who painted the original message as "three white kids from privileged families" who "don't know shit," and said The Fence was repainted to protect the school’s reputation and international students, not for financial or political reasons. Where’s My Permit? Now You Can Track It

A “Day One” priority for Mayor Corey O’Connor was permitting reform, and Pittsburghers can now track their development permits as they move through the approval process. Permits have historically taken months to get approved, with no way to check for updates online. "Before now, an applicant could track their pizza order but not their permit," O’Connor said. As a radio producer at heart, I can appreciate this beautiful collection at Baum Boulevard Automotive. (Laura Tsutsui / City Cast Pittsburgh)

We really stumped yinz: I spotted these radios while getting my car tuned up at Baum Boulevard Automotive. Kudos to the friend who super-sleuthed through Google Street View to find it!
