An overhead shot of three bowls of Indian curry — a rich orange-red curry in the foreground garnished with fresh cilantro and whole spices, a green herb-based curry at the top, and a tomato-based dish at upper right — served alongside pieces of garlic naan on a dark stone surface, with a decorative gold ornament in the corner.

What Pittsburgh's Talking About

Catena Resigns As Council President

Pat Catena stepped down as Allegheny County Council President on Friday after backlash over a campaign mailer from his failed state House bid, claiming his opponent was "supported by an extreme left group that advocates for transgender athletes in sports." Most of his fellow councilors had been planning to vote for his removal at tonight's meeting. Catena plans to remain on council as the District 4 representative. [WESA / City Cast Pittsburgh]

Zoning Board Blocks Request to Cut Affordable Housing

The Pittsburgh Zoning Board of Adjustment rejected Walnut Capital’s request to remove a requirement that 10% of apartments in its student housing project in Oakland be leased at affordable rents. The board said Walnut Capital failed to justify the need for a variance and began construction while it was "fully aware" of the neighborhood's inclusionary zoning policy. [🔐 Business Times]

Court Upholds Police Use of ShotSpotter Alerts

Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court ruled that police can legally use ShotSpotter gunshot alerts to help justify stops and searches, but didn't say whether the alerts alone are enough for probable cause. The case involved a Pittsburgh man who was stopped by police, arrested, and charged with a DUI after ShotSpotter reported nearby gunshots. The technology has faced controversy for concerns over accuracy, transparency, and oversight. [TribLive]

Find this stack of records and ode-to-tomatoes shelf at the new Muns Pizza in Brighton Heights.

Dan Tomcik’s “yinzerpolitan pizza” has a crust that’s perfectly chewy, airy, and crispy, and the tomato sauce strikes a great balance between sweet and savory. Stop by for a slice and hang out at Allegheny City Brewing’s new taproom right next door.

Explore more of the neighborhood: Brighton Heights hosts a summer series in Legion Park with music, vendors, and more. The first Li’l Bridgey 5K is happening on May 30 in celebration of the new pedestrian bridge connected to Riverview Park. Plus, the community is putting on a book fair in July.
