What Pittsburgh's Talking About

New Curfew for Teens in Market Square

A new temporary policy requires anyone under 18 to be accompanied by someone over 21 during select hours, Thursday through Sunday. The rule comes after large groups of teenagers were reportedly being disruptive to traffic and nearby businesses. It's not yet clear how long the policy will be in place or how it will be enforced. Walnut Capital Takes Over Strip District Terminal

The local real estate firm will soon handle operations, tenant experiences, and community programming at the five-block destination along Smallman Street. The building is owned by the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh and was previously leased to Chicago-based McCaffery Interests, who invested tens of millions to redevelop the site. [WPXI]

County Launches Childcare Initiative

The new "Forward with Families" initiative aims to expand access to childcare and out-of-school time programs — with the goal of creating 5,000 new childcare slots over the next five years. Residents can search for childcare options, summer camps, and more using the Forward with Families Program Finder. [Allegheny County]

PA Enters Legal Battle for Abortion Pill Access

Gov. Josh Shapiro joined a multistate effort to reverse a federal appeals court decision that restricts access to abortion medication. Last week, a New Orleans federal court ruled that the abortion pill mifepristone could only be provided in person at clinics. Shapiro called it “a direct attack on women’s health care and their ability to make decisions about their own bodies.” [WESA]

10 Essential Rules for Surviving Pittsburgh

1. 📍 Know Your Neighborhoods

Our rivers, hills, and valleys have created unique boundaries for Pittsburgh’s 90 neighborhoods — pockets of communities with their own special character. Even within those official neighborhoods, there are many distinct sub-neighborhoods — like Four Mile Run in Greenfield or Mexican War Streets in the Central North Side.

  • Explore hidden gems through our neighborhood guide archive. (I’m slowly making my way through Pittsburgh’s 90 neighborhoods, with pit stops in boroughs and townships along the way.)

2. 📚 Get (& Use) A Library Card

There are dozens of Carnegie Library branches across Allegheny County, and even more that participate in its lending library programs. But did you know that you can check out more than just books? From power tools to bakeware, here are some things you might not know you can get with a library card.

3. 🌳 Protect Your Parks & Rivers

We’re lucky to have lush green spaces and waterways for outdoor recreation. Springdale-born environmentalist and author Rachel Carson once said: “Conservation is a cause that has no end. There is no point at which we will say our work is finished.” Here are six ways to get involved, from volunteer cleanups to tree planting to community gardens.
