What Pittsburgh's Talking About

DA Reveals Details of Search Warrant on City

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala says his office is working with federal agents to investigate the use of pandemic relief funding during former Mayor Ed Gainey’s administration — money that was supposed to go toward programs for at-risk youth. Zappala served a search warrant on the city last month. [TribLive]

  • Just a couple of hours before Zappala’s statement, a judge refused to unseal the warrant. Cooperating witnesses said they feared retaliation and investigators voiced concern it would jeopardize the case if disclosed. [Post-Gazette]

Penguins Playoff Season Ends In Overtime

The Philadelphia Flyers won 1-0 in a nail-biting game against the Penguins last night, concluding the teams’ first-round playoff series. Despite it being a crushing loss, making it to game six was something to celebrate; the Pens dropped the first three games and managed to turn around the series with back-to-back wins. Many didn’t even expect the Pens — and our veteran players Crosby, Malkin, and Letang — to make it to the playoffs. Could this be the last time the big three play together? 😭 [City Cast Pittsburgh]

Pitt Opens $240 Million Sports Complex

The Victory Heights sports complex, located right next to Peterson Events Center, serves as a dedicated practice facility and locker rooms for the university’s gymnastics, volleyball, wrestling, and spirit squads. The building can seat more than 3,600 people and is open just in time for commencement ceremonies this week. [TribLive]

Pittsburgh Water Gets Funding for Upgrades

Pittsburgh is receiving nearly $78 million for improvements the city’s drinking water and sewer systems from PENNVEST, a state investment authority. The funding will be used to replace aging infrastructure and remove lead service lines in 12 neighborhoods. [WPXI]

  • 🌳 “The historic Allegheny Cemetery in Lawrenceville! It's beautiful, and the fact that it's open to the public is to be treasured. The sycamore trees are among the oldest and largest trees in the city. There are flowers and grassy spaces in a neighborhood that doesn't have many. Lots of wildlife & fascinating headstones, too. — Sonya S.
