traffic cone PGH2O

Traffic cones are the new party hats? (Francesca Dabecco / City Cast Pittsburgh)

There’s a new way to celebrate a Buccos win — hoisting the cone!

A traffic cone is a fitting symbol for Pittsburgh, since we like to wallow in what seems like never-ending construction. But a symbol of celebration? That’s a new one.

From the ballpark dugout to North Shore streets, players and fans alike are raising traffic cones after a victory like they’re the Jolly Roger. It’s not totally clear where the trend came from, but we’re not here to ruin a good time.

The only problem: More than two dozen cones were stolen on opening day, and they’re not cheap to replace! (Yinz know we need them here.)

What Pittsburgh's Talking About

Pgh Passes Bill Banning ICE Cooperation

City Council unanimously approved legislation that prohibits employees from gathering or sharing information about residents’ immigration status, targeting people based on their perceived nationalities, and working with federal agents to identify or arrest people. Mayor Corey O’Connor plans to sign the bill into law. Two related bills that would further limit ICE activity in Pittsburgh are still under consideration. [Public Source]

NFL Draft Boost Might Not Benefit Everyone

The three-day event is expected to bring in hundreds of thousands of fans and generate more than $120 million, but that doesn’t necessarily mean all local businesses will see a big profit. Past draft cities warn that once people enter the event gates, they often don’t wander and spend money elsewhere. VisitPITTSBURGH says businesses outside the event footprint shouldn’t “overprepare for a large influx.”

Gov. Shapiro in Laurel Caverns

Laurel Caverns is our 125th state park. PA’s parks are free to enter, but there’s a cost for a guided tour of the cave. (@governershapiro)

Laurel Caverns Becomes Newest State Park

Gov. Josh Shapiro announced the opening of PA’s first underground state park in Fayette County this week. About an hour and a half drive south of Pittsburgh, Laurel Caverns spans 435 acres and is the largest and deepest limestone cave in PA. The cavern opens for the season on Earth Day, April 22, and will stay open through October. [Commonwealth of PA]

State House Has High Hopes for New Bills

PA is one of the few states with a split legislature, which makes it extra hard for a bill to become law. The Democratic-controlled House recently passed bills to gradually raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $15, require data centers to give more information to the state, and codify same-sex marriage. But do any of these proposals stand a chance in the Republican-controlled state Senate? [City Cast Pittsburgh]

Primanti Bros. Closes 2 Locations

The iconic Pittsburgh chain shut down its Monroeville and North Versailles restaurants, citing a “shift in consumer behavior.” The Monroeville location will become Thorn Hill Tap-House and the North Versailles spot will turn into Smash Pub, a sister restaurant to The Smash Shack on the North Side. 1,000 Things We Love About Pittsburgh: By the Numbers

golden bridges and lights reflecting on river at night

What’s not to love about the Burgh? (Megan Harris / City Cast Pittsburgh

ICYMI, we hit 1,000 episodes of City Cast Pittsburgh! To celebrate, we're making a list of 1,000 things we love about our city — and we want your help. Here are some of the themes we've seen so far, by the numbers.

🏙️ 8 Pittsburghers think our city is just the right size. We're large enough to have all the big city amenities without feeling overwhelming and small enough so you're always running into your friends around town.

🏡 14 of yinz mentioned you’re a big fan of our neighborhoods. You love that they’re cozy and walkable (depending on the hilliness) and that each one has a distinct and eclectic personality.

🌉 6 of you said you love the view when you drive inbound through the Fort Pitt Tunnel — one of our favorite things to show visitors when we pick them up from the airport!

  • Want to see the city from another perspective? One person recommended looking down toward the river instead of up at the skyline. At night when the Mon is calm, you'll see the lights from Downtown and Station Square twinkling on the water.

⚾ 4 people said something about the Pirates. Your comments ranged from cheering on the Buccos on a summer night to (even) finding joy when watching the Pirates lose. One person gets a kick out of watching Michael Keaton "relentlessly posting about his disgust" with the team on Instagram.

  • Of course, we also received notes about the pierogi race. Jalapeño Hannah is a crowd favorite!

🛝 16 yinzers love our parks, especially Schenley and Frick Park. Did you know that we actually have more than 100 parks? We love hearing about your favorite neighborhood green spaces, so send more recommendations our way.

🍕 2 shoutouts for the calzone at Big Jim's in the Run!

  • We got so many submissions complimenting our local restaurants, coffee shops, and breweries, including Polska Laska, Cop Out Pierogis, Angkor, Five Points Bakery, Spigolo, Brew Gentlemen, Pamela's, and lots more. Plus, a special shoutout for the ranch at Eat'n Park 😂

🎉 And we still want to hear from you! Join us at 412 Day (a totally real holiday) to continue celebrating our city. We'll be at Southern Tier Brewing Co. on the North Shore this Sunday, April 12 from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is totally free and family-friendly, and the fun includes a live DJ, vendor market, flash tattoos, and our exclusive Nebby Neighbor beer. RSVP here to help us get a headcount.
