What Else Pittsburgh's Talking About

Building PA’s Low-Carbon Future

A new state law could lead to more regulations around carbon capture and storage — that is, trapping carbon emissions deep underground instead of releasing them into the air. Supporters say carbon capture is one way to slow climate change, particularly for industries like steel-making, but some environmental groups say it’s still unproven. [The Allegheny Front]

  • 🔋 Speaking of energy, did you know Pennsylvania could be sitting on enough lithium — literally — to power almost half the country? But getting to it could be a problem...

Digital Equity in Pittsburgh

A $1.25 billion federal grant program will increase high-speed internet access for underserved communities across the country, including here in Pittsburgh. Billions more have been allocated to install fiber. These additional funds will support digital literacy education, hotspots for families without secure housing, and more. [90.5 WESA]

Healthy Eating in Homewood

Students at Lincoln and Faison elementary schools are learning new recipes, how to buy from a farmers market, and how to read nutrition labels. Homewood doesn’t have a grocery store; after-school program organizers say they want to help children learn about “alternate ways to access nutritious food.” [Pittsburgh City Paper]

Where Is It?

This week’s challenge location is a private spot perched on a ridge high above the Allegheny River, where rolling hills and a historic golf course meet. (Photo credit will be revealed next week with the winners!)

🎨 Shoutout to friend of the pod Laura Zurowski, aka @mis.steps, who shared a little history behind these North Side fixtures!

They’re by artist Linda Wallen and made of ceramic tile. You can see them at the intersection of Itin and Goehring streets, or on one of Laura’s wonderful city step tours through the neighborhood. You can also check out Pittsburgh’s city step history in Laura’s new book, City Steps of Pittsburgh: A History & Guide, available online and in all the local shops.
