Your Daily Guide

Good morning, neighbor! Did you know we "practice" for St. Patrick's Day here? I’ve never heard anything more hilariously Pittsburgh!

🎧 On today’s episode of City Cast Pittsburgh, hear host Megan Harris and I chat about this pseudo-holiday 🍻 and where to get Irish eats ☘️ in the next couple of weeks.

What Pittsburgh's Talking About

South Hills Finally Gets Snow Removal!

The city broke ground on a new Department of Public Works facility in Knoxville on Wednesday. The new, energy-efficient building has been in the works for six years; it's expected to help with snow removal in South Hills neighborhoods like Beechview, Brookline, Carrick, Mt. Washington, Overbrook, and Bon Air. [City of Pittsburgh / TribLIVE]

County Votes ‘No’ On Cease-Fire Resolution

While Allegheny County Council has no say in U.S. foreign policy, nearly 300 residents signed up to speak at a public testimony on Tuesday, many for and others against a cease-fire resolution. Ultimately, Council voted against the resolution. While the measure is mostly symbolic, it can put pressure on federal officials and sends a message to local residents. [90.5 WESA]

  • 🗳️ Passing a symbolic measure isn’t unheard of. At least 70 local governments across the U.S. have called for an end to the conflict. And council opened the door back in October when they passed a resolution “condemning Hamas and supporting justice and safety for the Israeli and Palestinian people.”

City’s Spay & Neuter Program Is Back, Sort Of

After pausing the program in February, Pittsburgh is partially resuming its spay and neuter initiative — but only for feral cats. The program allowed residents to get up to five pets spayed and neutered for free every year, but it abruptly halted because officials say suburban residents were abusing the program by faking city addresses. If you have knowledge of food systems, lived experience, or community connections, you could be a great fit for the city's new Food Justice Fund Governance Committee.

City Council established the fund in July 2023 to “build food sovereignty and end food apartheid in their neighborhoods.” The nine-person committee will include seven community members, one person from Mayor Ed Gainey’s staff, and another from City Council’s staff.

Supported by federal American Rescue Plan money, the fund will focus on neighborhoods most in need. The city is determining those areas by using census data and the Healthy Food Priority Access Areas, which shows rates of diabetes and obesity in relation to food access.

Applications are open through March 17.
