| What Else Pittsburgh's Talking About |
| Shuman to Reopen Under Private Firm | Two years after it closed due to failed inspections, Allegheny County plans to reopen its juvenile detention center in Lincoln-Lemington under a contract with Adelphoi. City Council members and advocates are disturbed by the decision because there have been multiple sexual abuse allegations with Adelphoi employees. Council also questioned the decision to enter a long-term contract just before the new county executive is elected; both candidates, Democrat Sara Innamorato and Republican Joe Rockey, say they oppose this decision. Renovations at the facility will begin in October and finish by the end of the year. [PublicSource] | | Finally, an Above Ground Pittsburgh Potty | Gotta go? There’s a mobile bathroom trailer installed Downtown at the corner of Stanwix Street and Liberty Avenue that’s open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. A second temporary public restroom will open this week at Smithfield Street and Strawberry Way, thanks to a six-month, $2 million pilot project. [Pittsburgh City Paper] | | Steelers Keep Hope Alive | The Cleveland Browns have now gone 20 years without a 2-0 start to the season, but last night, Pittsburgh almost handed them a break. The Steelers squeaked out a 26-22 victory, thanks once again to a fearsome show from the defensive line — including T.J. Watt, who snagged an all-time franchise record for sacks and his first career touchdown. Browns running back Nick Chubb suffered a brutal knee injury in the second quarter and did not return. [Megan Harris / City Cast Pittsburgh] | | Federal Funds for Pittsburgh Forestry | A group of environmental nonprofits and the City of Pittsburgh received a combined $9 million toward a tree planting initiative in underserved communities; projects to improve tree canopy and forest resiliency; and planting and maintaining trees in parks, public greenspaces, and along residential streets. [TribLIVE] | | Clemente Day Inspires Compassion | Last week, students from San Juan, Puerto Rico honored Pirates legend Roberto Clemente by volunteering in the city where he played 18 seasons. The trip was thanks to a partnership between the Pittsburgh nonprofit Amizade and Puerto Rican nonprofit Caras con Causa. The students worked with the Hill District-based Center that Cares, Tree Pittsburgh, and Light of Life. | - The nonprofits want to make this an annual event. You can help by donating through the Amizade and Caras con Causa websites. [TribLIVE]
